Problems Your Roof's Shingles May Encounter

When a homeowner is not well-informed about the issues that their roofing can experience, it can be easy for them to simply fail to respond to these problems correctly. As a result, their property can suffer a range of significant complications that may be highly damaging.

Missing Completely

Missing shingles can be a significant issue that will have the potential to ruin the appearance of the home as well as causing structural issues that will need to be addressed. While a homeowner may easily recognize the need to have shingles replaced if there are many of them missing, it can be easier to overlook the urgency of this repair if the missing shingles are relatively scattered or only a few are missing. However, these can still represent openings in the exterior of the roof that will be able to allow water to enter the structure, which means that they should be repaired as quickly as possible to limit the scope of the damage.

Curling At The Edges

As the shingles age, they can start to curl at the edges. This can be a very noticeable problem, and it will severely reduce the effectiveness of the protection that the roof is offering the home. Sadly, there is little that can be done to repair shingles that have started to curl at the edge. This means that they will need to be replaced, which can be a sizable undertaking for a homeowner to make. If the curled shingles are allowed to remain in place, it will be possible for large amounts of moisture to seep under the shingles, which can lead to a variety of issues. Rot may be the most obvious threat from this issue, but it is also possible for the moist conditions to lead to the growth of a large amount of mold. While the shingles near the edge of the home may exhibit the curling in an obvious way, it is also possible and likely that shingles further away from the edges are also curling.

Bleaching

Shingles will also tend to lose their color as they age. This is due to the wear that can occur from the sun's intense ultraviolet rays of light striking it. Over time, they will be able to cause the exposed portion of the shingles to fade. This can lead to the roof appearing dull or even grey. While this bleaching may not directly cause structural issues for the roof, it can be an unsightly problem that may also indicate that the roof is approaching the end of its lifespan.
